Extending Dining Tables: Made Simple
The size of your dining table should be proportional to the size of your dining room or kitchen dining area. While you want a dining table that is large enough to fit everyone around it comfortably, you don’t want a table that is the wrong size for your space or people will end up cramped and knocking elbows during mealtime.
In a small kitchen or dining room, a compact dining table is the best option, so that you have enough room to move about, but still have enough space to display other furniture like sideboards, cabinets, etc. But what if you’re hosting a dinner party, seating a large family, or you simply need a larger tabletop on special occasions? Extending dining tables are the answer!
With extending dining tables, you can easily change the size of your tabletop to suit your requirements for a particular mealtime. And with a variety of extending dining table types, you can be sure that you will find the perfect pick to upgrade your dining room or kitchen.
What are the different types of extending dining tables?
There are a number of different mechanisms that dining table manufacturers use to allow dining tables to extend. The most popular options are the following:
Butterfly leaf extensions are named after their resemblance to wings when the extension is being opened. This type of dining table features a seam at the centre that splits the table in half and allows you to pull it to its wider length. The extending panels are hidden within the underside of the table and lift up to slot into place.
Removable leaf extensions are similar to butterfly leaf extending tables in that the extra panels fit into the centre of the table. However, as the name suggests, they differ in that the extending panels are stored separately from the dining table when not in use. While this means that you need to find an additional storage space for them, it allows the table to maintain an appealingly slim look and design.
Unlike butterfly and removable leaf extensions, drop leaf dining tables extend at the ends, rather than from the middle, of the table. The extra panels hang down from either side of the table, then lift up and lock into place when you need the extra length. There are also table designs that feature removable panels at the ends rather than panels that drop down, but these are less common.

How much larger can extending dining tables be made?
Generally, extending dining tables can grow between 0.4 and 0.5 metres. This usually offers enough extra length to seat up to two additional people. So if you have a dining table that seats four, an extending dining table will allow you to serve six.
At Corcoran’s, we have a number of different extending dining table size options ranging from ultra-compact 1.05 metre tables that extend to 1.35 metres, to roomy 1.8 metre tables that extend even further to a spacious 2.3 metres. Most of our tables begin in the 1.2-1.4 metre range and extend to 1.6-1.8 metres, offering ideal proportions for both intimate and larger mealtime seatings.
How should I care for extending dining tables?
Well-made craftsmanship and quality materials mean that, for the most part, you can treat your extending dining tables like any other dining room furniture. However, there are a few extra steps you should take to ensure the best longevity and maximum convenience for your space.
Look after the sliding mechanisms of your extending dining tables. Clean and lubricate metal runners or hinges, and vacuum or dust away any particles or debris that might cause sticking or clogging. If liquid spills on your table, don’t forget to dry the interior of the extension and not just the table top.
If you choose a wooden table with removable leaves, store the leaves in the same room as the table when not in use, or at least in an area with similar temperature and humidity levels. Wood can swell and shrink with changing levels of heat and humidity, and you will want to ensure that all parts of the table will be in a similar environment so that they will fit smoothly and tightly.
